ICONIC IMAGE - DAY 4
As the Championships’ photographic manager, Bob Martin appreciates the finer details of the images which every day capture the essence of Wimbledon. In this series celebrating the best of the AELTC’s talent behind the lens, he nominates his Picture of the Day 2018
Bradley Klahn: In the frame
British player, underdog, Centre Court in the evening. These are three phrases which summon up a quintessential Wimbledon scenario, but in this beautifully atmospheric picture, the underdog is American Bradley Klahn, who progressed through three rounds of Qualifying and carved out a first-round defeat of Yuichi Sugita to earn himself a match-up against home favourite and No. 21 seed Kyle Edmund on the greatest stage in tennis.
“This is an absolutely classic Wimbledon view with the evening sun creating long shadows off the players,” says Bob. “The final spell of strong sunshine on Centre Court illuminates the subject against the shaded background. Jed Leicester’s picture proves it doesn’t always take a long lens to get a great shot.”
After a late afternoon with consistent cloud cover, the sun came out for about 10 minutes on Centre Court. “It created an arc of light in that corner and all I had to do was aim and wait for ‘the image’ to come to me,” says Jed.
“The reason it’s framed like this is because I wanted to tidy up a messy view. Just out of frame to the left is a ball boy and TV camera scaffolding, and just below it is the netting that stretches in front of the wheelchair viewing area. If I’m being picky, I would ideally have liked Edmund to have been the shot, but in that opportune moment of light, it was Klahn who was receiving serve there.”
