Mums of the day
There were six, now it is just two - and there can be only one winner. Serena Williams will face Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina (above), the world No.120, in the fourth round - a meeting of the two mothers remaining in the draw. Rodina, who knocked out Madison Keys, had never previously beaten a top 20 player in 15 attempts, or reached the second week of a major.
Her only previous appearance in the third round of a Slam was exactly a decade ago, on her Championships debut in 2008. Rodina is thrilled to be facing the seven-time champion, saying: "Serena is my idol. She's a great player, a great mother and plays unbelievable tennis."
Slips of the day
Gael Monfils fell badly in his match with No.11 seed Sam Querrey and had to leave the court for treatment. It obviously did the trick as he returned to deliver a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory and reach the fourth round.
However, the French player was eclipsed by Barbora Strycova, whose attempt to reach a ball in her defeat by Julia Goerges ended with the No.23 seed crashing into her chairs at the side of the court. A raised arm let the crowd know she was unhurt.
Recovery of the day
Alexander Zverev, the No.4 seed, is through to the fourth round but admitted after his five set win over Taylor Fritz that he considered quitting while warming up on No.1 Court. The match had been halted by bad light on Thursday night and the German didn’t know if he could last a possible two sets having been unable to eat.
“Yesterday I had pain during the whole three sets," he said. "After the second set, I actually went to throw up during the toilet break, then I felt a little bit better. But I felt very low energy.
"Today, in the warm up, I was actually maybe thinking about it - not to play at all. I was very low energy. I didn't eat anything since yesterday. But then I thought, 'well, if I don't feel well, it's going to be one set. If I feel better, it might be two'. Thought I'd go out there and try. Actually, the adrenaline pumped in. I felt great out there.” Next up for Zverev is family friend Ernests Gulbis.
Stat of the day
Gael Monfils has made it through to the fourth round with a dreadful Hawk-Eye challenge record. He has an 11.1 per cent success rate after nine challenges. So, just the one.
Quote of the day
Kevin Anderson on his guitar playing: “I'm going to go see Jack Johnson tonight, so maybe play a few of his songs today. That will be pretty fun to see. Yeah, I have it with me and I have a couple days off, so maybe I'll get in a bit more guitar time.”
