ICONIC IMAGE - DAY 11
As The Championships’ photographic manager, Bob Martin appreciates the finer details of the images which every day capture the essence of Wimbledon. In this series celebrating the best of the AELTC’s talent behind the lens, he nominates his picture of the day 2018.
KEVIN ANDERSON: IN SIGHT OF THE FINAL
The longest semi-final in the history of The Championships seemed to stretch to a gazillion games of serve and resistance. As neither player found a way of breaking the other in the final set, ultimate concentration was required from both Kevin Anderson and John Isner to prevent one giving the other the advantage. This photograph by Simon Bruty, taken early on in their six hour and 36 minute battle of attrition, shows the determination on Anderson’s face to fight for every point. After all, a place in the Wimbledon final was at stake.
“I’m very pleased with this shot of Simon’s,” says Bob. “Using a 200mm lens with a F2 aperture – ie with very little depth of field – he has focused perfectly on the athlete’s eyes. Therefore our eye is drawn directly to Kevin Anderson’s face and we can see the intensity of his effort, and that’s what makes it a great picture.”
“With his cap and his tendency not to show emotion, Anderson is a pretty difficult player to photograph,” says Simon. “This is a bold action picture which I think shows the intense concentration that Anderson needed to with this gruelling match.”
Technical info: This image was shot at 2.03pm on a Canon camera with a shutter speed of 1/5000th of a second, using a 200mm lens with an F2 aperture and a sensitivity setting of 160 ASA.
