ICONIC IMAGE - GENTLEMEN'S SINGLES FINAL
As The Championships’ photographic manager, Bob Martin appreciates the finer details of the images which every day capture the essence of Wimbledon. In this series celebrating the best of the AELTC’s talent behind the lens, he nominates his picture of the day 2018.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: THE DADDY OF ALL VICTORIES
Serena Williams was bidding to become the oldest mother ever to win a Grand Slam title and, from the runners-up spot on Saturday, she dedicated her Wimbledon campaign to “all the mums out there”. Twenty-four hours later, and quite under the radar, Novak Djokovic provided an ecstatic cameo of paternal pride as he heard his three-year-old son Stefan call out to him from his players’ box during the trophy presentation.
“This was a proper joyous moment,” says Bob. “Joel Marklund was positioned on Platform B on Centre Court and was picking off moments during the presentation. He has brilliantly captured the fleeting moment when Djokovic heard his son call out to him and his expression shows just how much it means to him for his son to witness his moment of triumph.”
“This was special,” agrees Joel. “In most trophy presentations, the athlete is focused solely on the trophy, but Djokovic’s face is lit up by something going on on the sidelines,” Joel says. “I was underneath the players’ boxes, and I heard a scream of ‘Daddy! Daddy!’ Djokovic, holding the trophy in celebration, was even more excited about sharing the moment with his young son and family.”
