An all-American meeting between five-time champion Venus Williams and teenager Cori Gauff is set to capture the imagination in the ladies' first round draw.
Unseeded Williams, 39, contesting Wimbledon for the 22nd time, plays a 15-year-old who is the youngest Wimbledon qualifier of the Open era.
Angelique Kerber will return to The Championships with only happy memories, and the 2018 ladies' champion will be intent on adding to them when she faces Tatijana Maria in the opening round.
But even as the German continues her sublime grass court form as a semi-finalist at Eastbourne, she also appreciates the many dangers in a time of change in the women’s game.
The former world No.1 – who would then face either Lauren Davis or Kateryna Kozlova in the second round.– has landed in the same quarter as newly minted world No.1 and Roland-Garros champion Ashleigh Barty.
Former champions Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Garbiñe Muguruza and Petra Kvitova also sit in that star-studded section of the draw.
Serena, a seven-time champion and the No.11 seed in 2019, starts against Italian qualifier Giulia Gatto-Monticone, with Krystina Pliskova or Kaja Juvan her potential opponents for round two.
Sharapova, who triumphed at Wimbledon in 2004, meets Pauline Parmentier in the first round, with either Carla Suarez Navarro or Samantha Stosur looming in the second round.
Muguruza, the 2017 champion and seeded No.26 in 2019, begins her quest for another Wimbledon title against Beatriz Haddad Maia, but could meet the top-seeded Barty in the third round.
The Australian, who ascended to top spot after collecting her 12th straight match win in the recent Birmingham final, faces Zheng Saisai in the first round, before a potential second round assignment against Svetlana Kuznetsova or Alison Van Uytvanck.
Two-time victor Kvitova, who is yet to play a grass court event in 2019 due to an arm injury, starts her campaign against Ons Jabeur. Despite a significantly lower ranking – No.62 to Kvitova’s current No.6 – the Tunisian will arrive with peak confidence, after progressing to the semi-finals at Eastbourne.
On the opposite side of the draw, No.2 seed Naomi Osaka, commences her campaign against Yulia Putinseva. As the defending US Open and Australian Open champion, the recently usurped world No.1 will be highly motivated for a first Wimbledon title, with the most likely early challenger coming from No.14 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round.
Other leading seeds will be equally keen to triumph at the All England Club for the first time. Karolina Pliskova, the No.3 seed, opens against Lin Zhu while Kiki Bertens (No.4) faces Mandy Minella and Simona Halep (No.7) will play Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the opening round.
Among British players, Johanna Konta (the No.19 seed) faces Ana Bogdan, Harriet Dart meets Christina McHale, Katie Swan faces Laura Siegemund, while Heather Watson contests the first round against Caty McNally.
Should the draw unfold according to seedings, projected quarter-finals would see Barty face Kerber and Bertens meet Kvitova. Elina Svitolina would meet Karolina Pliskova, with Halep potentially meeting Osaka.
