A Grand Slam is often defined by its champions – the moment they realise they’ve clinched the title, being presented with the trophy and seeing their name etched alongside other tennis greats.

The engraver’s workshop is located underneath the Royal Box on Centre Court, tucked away in the Clubhouse’s inner sanctum. With no natural light, the engraver directs a spotlight on to the surface of the silver they’re engraving and must work very quickly. There are mere minutes between a new champion sealing their victory and the trophy being presented by the All England Lawn Tennis Club’s patron.

Tennis enthusiasts will know that the names of the ladies’ singles champions were originally inscribed around the inside of the front of the salver. When this space was filled, engraving took place on the reverse, and since 2016 they have been engraved on the plinth upon which the trophy sits.

And although you may not be going home with your own personalised Wimbledon trophy this year, you can now personalise items from the Wimbledon Shop by adding your initials to a range of towels and baseball caps. With our embroidery service you can choose from black, white, green or purple thread and add up to three letters to create the perfect personal gift or make your own unique, personalised souvenir from The Championships 2024.
